And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Every born again believer has the right and privilege to speak in other tongues. The supernatural prayer language is just as available today as it was on the day of Pentecost. The baptism of the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in other tongues did not pass away with the apostles as some propagate. Those who are Anti-Tongues say that tongues is of the devil. If that be the case, then the Apostle Paul really missed God. In his own words to the church in Corinth, he emphatically declared, 'I thank God, I speak in tongues more than you all.' (1 Corinthians 14:18) No, no, no, 'tongues' is not of the devil, it is of the Holy Spirit. Dr Luke was very clear in his second treatise to the Most Excellent Theophilus, 'And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost...' . Tongues is the infilling of the Spirit. Peter spoke in tongues! James and John spoke in tongues and so did Paul. When you speak in tongues, you will be be in good company. As a believer you should speak in tongues because it is your right and your privilege. I have written much on the subject of tongues and we have a lot of materials available in our shop but for today allow to list three simple reasons why you should pray in tongues:
Because the early church spoke in tongues
If the Godhead saw it fitting and proper for the early church to speak in tongues then it is also proper for us to have the same experience. The old saying, 'what's good for the goose is good for the gander' is applicable to the early church and the last days church. Just like the same blood of Jesus that saves today saved people in the early church then the same Holy Spirit's baptism that the early church experienced belongs to the last days church.
Because tongues is your direct line to God
Tongues cuts through all the barriers and oppositions and gives you quick access to God.
For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue, speaketh not unto men but unto God.
1 Corinthians 14:2
There are so many people who would love an audience with God and do not know how to get it. Here Paul is informing us that when we pray in tongues it brings us right into the very Throne Room before God. Take advantage of it! I don't know how many times I have heard people say, 'I prayed and prayed and it feels like my prayers hit the roof and never went any further!' Well, through tongues as your heavenly prayer language it goes straight to God.
Because tongues is a source of spiritual edification
We live in an energy sapping world and in a world of political, financial and familial stress. In order to be up in a constantly down world we need to charge our daily battery. Just like you would charge your telephone, ipad and laptop in order to keep be kept connected and functioning we pray in tongues to recharge our spiritual battery.
He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself.
1 Corinthians 14:4
