The Prayer of Enquiry

There are many kinds of prayer in the bible. We have heard about - intercession, petition, consecration, supplication, binding and loosing, prayer of faith and prayer of agreement to name a few. But one of the greatest prayer I learnt about from King David is the prayer of enquiry. This is epitomized in his life when he was first anointed to be king over all of Israel and the Philistines came to launch an attack against him.

2 Samuel 5:17 -20; "When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over Israel, they went up in full force to search for him, but David heard about it and went down to the stronghold. Now the Philistines had come and spread out in the Valley of Rephaim; so David inquired of the Lord, “Shall I go and attack the Philistines? Will you deliver them into my hands?” The Lord answered him, “Go, for I will surely deliver the Philistines into your hands.” So David went to Baal Perazim, and there he defeated them. He said, “As waters break out, the Lord has broken out against my enemies before me.” So that place was called Baal Perazim. The Philistines abandoned their idols there, and David and his men carried them off. Once more the Philistines came up and spread out in the Valley of Rephaim; so David inquired of the Lord, and he answered, “Do not go straight up, but circle around behind them and attack them in front of the poplar trees. As soon as you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the poplar trees, move quickly, because that will mean the Lord has gone out in front of you to strike the Philistine army.” So David did as the Lord commanded him, and he struck down the Philistines all the way from Gibeon to Gezer."

Notice these words, 'David enquired of the Lord'. It is mentioned twice in the space of a few verses. This is what is called the prayer of enquiry. I want you to also notice the word  'Baal Perizim' which is translated as the Lord of the Breakthrough. It is the 'prayer of enquiry that provokes breakthrough. This is so important! David did not assume that because he was anointed as king over all of Israel that it automatically means victory and breakthrough is his. When faced with a problem, the freshly anointed king went before the Lord with the prayer of enquiry. He did it twice. The temptation would have been, 'Well, God said so the first time therefore it must mean the same thing again.' No, David did not take anything for granted. Once again he went before the Lord and the Lord answered him by giving him specific instructions and directions to obtain the victory.

  • What is the prayer of enquiry?
  • The prayer of enquiry is praying to obtain divine direction and divine strategy.

The prayer of enquiry will open you up to the strategies of God. It will forge a partnership with the Holy Spirit who is the Spirit of breakthrough. Many are anointed but still tasting defeat. Why? Because they think that because they are anointed that victory is ensured. The anointing is an enablement, it is to have power. But without direction you would be swinging punches in the wrong place and missing the target. Basically you would be shadow boxing! The prayer of enquiry secures divine guidance which secures divine breakthrough which paves the way for greatness. It is a 'question and answer' session with God. You do not have answers because you do not ask questions. You do not qualify for answers if you do not ask questions. The quality of your questions set you up for quality answers. Did you notice that when it said, 'And David enquired of the Lord' that it also said, 'And the Lord answered...'? GOd will always answer when we enquire. When was the last time you had a session of 'questions and answers' with God. We go through life trying to 'faith it out' in some circumstance that we are not seeing results in. We don't understand what is going on and yet we won't enquire. How many times have you had a bill from a company that you did not understand and you enquired for clarification? Many times and there have been times when the company made a mistake and rectified the bills. If you can do that in the natural when you feel that something is not quite right, what makes you think that you cannot do that with God when things are not going right in your life. Ask God! He does not feel threatened by questions. GOd wants you to engage him in conversation. Talk to him, enquire of him and just as he answered David, he will also answer you. This is your key to breakthrough. Employ the prayer of enquiry in your arsenal of prayer from today! (G.A)
