  The Imposition of Hands

Glenn Arekion

Hebrews 6:1-2: Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.

The imposition of hands played a prominent role in the Bible - Both the Old and New Testament.

The modern church cannot and must not trivialize what God calls holy.

2 Timothy 1:6 Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.

Paul was able to transmit a gift to Timothy through the laying on of his hands.

Romans 1:11 For I long to see you, that I may impart unto you some spiritual gift, to the end ye may be established;

Impartation comes several ways

1 Association

2 Communication of information - Teaching or prophetic utterance/declaration

3 Pursuit - what you pursue after is what you will possess

4 Imposition of hands

The laying on of hands played a prominent role in the Bible and also in the ministry of Jesus.

Healing and deliverance

Luke 4:38-41: And he arose out of the synagogue, and entered into Simon's house. And Simon's wife's mother was taken with a great fever; and they besought him for her.

39  And he stood over her, and rebuked the fever; and it left her: and immediately she arose and ministered unto them.

40  Now when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with divers diseases brought them unto him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them.

41  And devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying, Thou art Christ the Son of God. And he rebuking them suffered them not to speak: for they knew that he was Christ.

Blessing Transfer

Mark 10:13-16:  And they brought young children to him, that he should touch them: and his disciples rebuked those that brought them.

14  But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.

15  Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein.

16  And he took them up in his arms, put his hands upon them, and blessed them.

Separation

We see in the Scriptures,  the imposition of hands is not only associated with blessing and impartation but with separation from the larger group. Separation for uncommon or holy use.

Exodus 29:10 And thou shalt cause a bullock to be brought before the tabernacle of the congregation: and Aaron and his sons shall put their hands upon the head of the bullock.

Separation and consecrated unto/Consecration

Numbers 8:5-15 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

6  Take the Levites from among the children of Israel, and cleanse them.

7  And thus shalt thou do unto them, to cleanse them: Sprinkle water of purifying upon them, and let them shave all their flesh, and let them wash their clothes, and so make themselves clean.

8  Then let them take a young bullock with his meat offering, even fine flour mingled with oil, and another young bullock shalt thou take for a sin offering.

9  And thou shalt bring the Levites before the tabernacle of the congregation: and thou shalt gather the whole assembly of the children of Israel together:

10  And thou shalt bring the Levites before the Lord: and the children of Israel shall put their hands upon the Levites:

11  And Aaron shall offer the Levites before the Lord for an offering of the children of Israel, that they may execute the service of the Lord.

12  And the Levites shall lay their hands upon the heads of the bullocks: and thou shalt offer the one for a sin offering, and the other for a burnt offering, unto the Lord, to make an atonement for the Levites.

13  And thou shalt set the Levites before Aaron, and before his sons, and offer them for an offering unto the Lord.

14  Thus shalt thou separate the Levites from among the children of Israel: and the Levites shall be mine.

15  And after that shall the Levites go in to do the service of the tabernacle of the congregation: and thou shalt cleanse them, and offer them for an offering.

Definition

The imposition of hands is done according to the principle of contact  and transmission

The laying on of hands is one of the conduits through which the healing power of God flows.

It is the conductor of power.  To have a service, preach the Word and not pray or lay hands on people is like setting up the new electronic gadget you bought and then dont plug it in. It is no use.

TRANSMITTERS AND RECEIVERS

MOST PEOPLE IN THE BODY OF CHRIST ARE RECEIVERS

The two predominant ways that God’s power is released are through the mouth and the hands.

Benefits encounters of imposition of hands

1 Transference of generational/ covenantal blessing - Release of trans-generational covenantal inheritance

Genesis 48:1-20

1  And it came to pass after these things, that one told Joseph, Behold, thy father is sick: and he took with him his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim.

2  And one told Jacob, and said, Behold, thy son Joseph cometh unto thee: and Israel strengthened himself, and sat upon the bed.

3  And Jacob said unto Joseph, God Almighty appeared unto me at Luz in the land of Canaan, and blessed me,

4  And said unto me, Behold, I will make thee fruitful, and multiply thee, and I will make of thee a multitude of people; and will give this land to thy seed after thee for an everlasting possession.

5  And now thy two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh, which were born unto thee in the land of Egypt before I came unto thee into Egypt, are mine; as Reuben and Simeon, they shall be mine.

6  And thy issue, which thou begettest after them, shall be thine, and shall be called after the name of their brethren in their inheritance.

7  And as for me, when I came from Padan, Rachel died by me in the land of Canaan in the way, when yet there was but a little way to come unto Ephrath: and I buried her there in the way of Ephrath; the same is Beth–lehem.

8  And Israel beheld Joseph's sons, and said, Who are these?

9  And Joseph said unto his father, They are my sons, whom God hath given me in this place. And he said, Bring them, I pray thee, unto me, and I will bless them.

10  Now the eyes of Israel were dim for age, so that he could not see. And he brought them near unto him; and he kissed them, and embraced them.

11  And Israel said unto Joseph, I had not thought to see thy face: and, lo, God hath shewed me also thy seed.

12  And Joseph brought them out from between his knees, and he bowed himself with his face to the earth. (Respect towards laying on of hands)

13  And Joseph took them both, Ephraim in his right hand toward Israel's left hand, and Manasseh in his left hand toward Israel's right hand, and brought them near unto him.

14  And Israel stretched out his right hand, and laid it upon Ephraim's head, who was the younger, and his left hand upon Manasseh's head, guiding his hands wittingly; for Manasseh was the firstborn.

15  And he blessed Joseph, and said, God, before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac did walk, the God which fed me all my life long unto this day,

16  The Angel which redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads; and let my name be named on them, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth.

17  And when Joseph saw that his father laid his right hand upon the head of Ephraim, it displeased him: and he held up his father's hand, to remove it from Ephraim's head unto Manasseh's head.

18  And Joseph said unto his father, Not so, my father: for this is the firstborn; put thy right hand upon his head.

19  And his father refused, and said, I know it, my son, I know it: he also shall become a people, and he also shall be great: but truly his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his seed shall become a multitude of nations.

20  And he blessed them that day, saying, In thee shall Israel bless, saying, God make thee as Ephraim and as Manasseh: and he set Ephraim before Manasseh.

2 Release of authority, wisdom honor

Numbers 27:15-23 And Moses spake unto the Lord, saying,

16  Let the Lord, the God of the spirits of all flesh, set a man over the congregation,

17  Which may go out before them, and which may go in before them, and which may lead them out, and which may bring them in; that the congregation of the Lord be not as sheep which have no shepherd.

18  And the Lord said unto Moses, Take thee Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit, and lay thine hand upon him;

19  And set him before Eleazar the priest, and before all the congregation; and give him a charge in their sight.

20  And thou shalt put some of thine honour upon him, that all the congregation of the children of Israel may be obedient.

21  And he shall stand before Eleazar the priest, who shall ask counsel for him after the judgment of Urim before the Lord: at his word shall they go out, and at his word they shall come in, both he, and all the children of Israel with him, even all the congregation.

22  And Moses did as the Lord commanded him: and he took Joshua, and set him before Eleazar the priest, and before all the congregation:

23  And he laid his hands upon him, and gave him a charge, as the Lord commanded by the hand of Moses.

Deuteronomy 34:9 And Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom; for Moses had laid his hands upon him: and the children of Israel hearkened unto him, and did as the Lord commanded Moses.

3 Impartation of victory, guidance and deliverance

2 Kings 13:14-19

Now Elisha was fallen sick of his sickness whereof he died. And Joash the king of Israel came down unto him, and wept over his face, and said, O my father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof.

15  And Elisha said unto him, Take bow and arrows. And he took unto him bow and arrows.

16  And he said to the king of Israel, Put thine hand upon the bow. And he put his hand upon it: and Elisha put his hands upon the king's hands.

17  And he said, Open the window eastward. And he opened it. Then Elisha said, Shoot. And he shot. And he said, The arrow of the Lord's deliverance, and the arrow of deliverance from Syria: for thou shalt smite the Syrians in Aphek, till thou have consumed them.

18  And he said, Take the arrows. And he took them. And he said unto the king of Israel, Smite upon the ground. And he smote thrice, and stayed.

19  And the man of God was wroth with him, and said, Thou shouldest have smitten five or six times; then hadst thou smitten Syria till thou hadst consumed it: whereas now thou shalt smite Syria but thrice.

4 Release of healing to the ailing and sick

Mark 16:15-18

And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

16  He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

17  And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;

18  They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

James 5:14-15 Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:

15  And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.

Oil for believers - No oil for unbelievers

Is any sick ? There should not be any sick in the church!!

It didn’t say, ‘Are many of you sick?”

Psalm 105:37 He brought them forth also with silver and gold: and there was not one feeble person among their tribes.

Sickness is for Egypt not for the church.

Exodus 15:26: And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the Lord thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the Lord that healeth thee.

Healing comes easier to church attendees than those who keeps hopping.

2  As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them.

3  And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.

DONT LAY HANDS UPON ANYONE CARELESSLY

1 Timothy 5:22 Lay hands suddenly on no man, neither be partaker of other men's sins: keep thyself pure.

  1. Dont lay hands on people casually, nonchalantly or carelessly
  2. Claim the continual protection of the blood
  3. Seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit
  4. DO not lay hands upon people if you are not empowered by the Spirit
