That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;
Philippians 3 10
Imagine two people trying to get to know each other and love one another without knowing each others names. "Inconceivable!", you would say. The same is true concerning our relationship with our Lord and God. As we discover and understand the names of our God, the more our love for him will increase. In the Lord's Prayer, we are told, 'Hallowed be thy name'. God's name is holy, sacred and sanctified. Knowing God's name is a good way to know God because it reveals to us his person, nature and his work. In the Old Testament there are three fundamental names of God beside his other names and titles. They are Elohim, Jehovah and Adonai.
- Elohim refers to God as the Omnipotent Creator
- Jehovah unveils God as the Self Existent Lord who reveals himself
- Adonai reveals God as Master and Head
Studying the various names of God is more than just studying his many titles. The names reveal and relate to the then epoch of the world and God's peoples perspective of him at a particular point in their history. Also during the Old Testament era, Israel connected the divine presence or power of God to his name. The name Jehovah is the most frequently employed name in the Old Testament. It appears 6823 times. Jehovah's names reveal His redemptive relationship to us. In the Old Testament, there are seven redemptive names of the Lord demonstrating his capability of supplying our every human need. The seven redemptive names of Jehovah are:
1 - Jehovah Rohi – The Lord my shepherd
The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want
2 - Jehovah Jireh – The Lord my provider
And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovahjireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.
3 - Jehovah Rapha – The Lord my healer
And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth thee."
4 - Jehovah Shalom - The Lord my peace
Then Gideon built an altar there unto the LORD, and called it Jehovahshalom: unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.
5 - Jehovah Nissi – The Lord my banner
And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovahnissi unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

It was round about eighteen thousand measures: and the name of the city from that day shall be, The LORD is there.
